Stefan Gonet was again the cup hero as Bankies booked a semi final spot in the Emirates Scottish Cup at Holm Park yesterday
The sun was shining on Holm Park yesterday as a crowd of 623 witnessed the Bankies winning through to the semi final once again.
The Haws turned up in good form and a tough game was played out as expected.
Indeed, the fans didn't have long to wait as Michael Stuart fired the visitors in ront after two minutes. Bankies failed to defend a throw in from the right and the ball dropped to Stuart around 25 yards out, side stepped Ross Campbell and fired in low to Stefan Gonet's left hand post.
The Haws were the better team in the opening stages and should have had a second goal when a free header was put past the post with Gonet relieved.
As the half wore on, Bankies came back into it and forced a series of poorly delivered corners, failing to test the away sides keeper. The referee also made some baffling calls and had his book out on a number of occasions with hardly a bad tackle on show.
Such was the first half, it was almost a relief thatthe half time whistle came and whatever Budgie McGhie and co said in the dressing room, it worked.
Three minutes in and the scores were level. Gary Lynn flighted in a lovely ball from a free kick and ROSS CAMPBELL stole in at the back post to beautifully head the ball into the postage stamp corner of the net with the keeper well beaten.
Clydebank were on the up now and showed a bit more on an attacking note. Gonet was still kept on his toes though with a couple of saves as both sides gave it a go.
Clydebank would be the team to get the next goal and it had a bit of luck about it. John Harvey was the taker of a set peice wide on the right and his whipped ball appeared to be finding the head of Chris Mackie at the back post but the unfortunate BARRY GRANT got in just before him to knock the ball by his own keeper and into the net to the delight of the Bankies support.
The visitors had the chance to level the tie from the penalty spot with twenty minutes to go. John Harvey rashly dived into a tackle on the left of th ebox and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Step forward last seasons penalty king Stefan Gonet to dive to his right and stop the spot kick before the ball was cleared for a corner.
The Haws threw everything forward in the closing stages but Gonet and the back line were equal to everything. Special mentions go to Ross Campbell at the back and John Jack in centre midfield who broke down almost everything the visitors threw at them.
Bankies now look forward to the draw which includes Linlithgow, Lochee United and the winners of the Largs - Irvine Meadow replay.
Clydebank return to league duty with a trip to face Dalry next Saturday before the first midweek game of the year at Rutherglen on the Wednesday night.
